Mech was the innocent victim of a drive-by shooting that left him paralyzed from the waist down when he was only 12, and he has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.  For several years, he experienced life solely through the screen of his computer, earning multiple engineering degrees and designing advanced systems for Avalon City’s infrastructure but losing his sense of balance in real life.  The distance he places between himself and actual people is reflected in his enjoyment of simulated violence and destruction.
